To Be Worn: Origin
I come from a family of small business owners. At a young age I was taught dedication, patience and pride for building a business. My family’s business was a construction company, or more specifically an HVAC company. Because of these two things I had absolutely no idea how my family would react to me pursuing, of all things, a fashion business. A business was applauded and smiled upon, but a fashion business in the midst of construction? When the day came that I decided to follow my passion and life's ambition, my family, though at first surprised, soon realized that nothing fit me better than this business.
I have been my family and friends' stylist since before I could remember. When my cousins and I played models, I was always dressing them while they listened to what they were to do. It wasn’t long before I realized that while I was dressing everyone up, I needed to show that in my own style. For the next few years of my angsty teenage life I showed my passion through my own clothes and expression. That drew people in and caused many years of comments like “Where is that from?” “I love that” “I love how you put that together.” Slowly, the passion emerged for dressing people again. I wanted to take what I did on myself and put it on to others. People became my canvas. My art: aligning personal expression with trends and seasonal clothing.
Now I sit, 22, about to graduate with a dual humanities major, deciding to throw slavic studies to the side and pursue the only thing I could possibly do with my life, a fashion business.
I hope we can grow and learn together as we dissect what in the world is happening to our clothes and why!
